Have you discovered the 200 denier tights with in built socks from Primark yet? If not, go and get a pair! They are so warm and comfortable and the socks are lovely and thick so great to wear with boots to keep your feet that extra bit warmer.
I wore mine today with ankle boots and the sock bit was low enough not to peek over the top. I don't know how much they are (around £3-4) as I stole mine from my mum (sorry mum, you're not getting them back!) but I don't imagine coming from Primark that they'll break the bank.
