My Latest Volunteering Role - Penny Brohn Hub
One of the privileges of my professional life as a stylist so far, was volunteering for a local Bristol charity for over 7 years. Every Thursday I would dress their mannequins, style their window and do whatever else needed to be done, and I loved every second of it. I made great friends, met amazing customers, had many laughs and of course, found plenty of fabulous bargains. All the clothes that my clients cleared from their wardrobes were donated and over the years, raised £1000’s to support the charity. Last year, after we got our puppy, I had to put my volunteering days on hold in order to look after him, then lockdown happened and sadly the shop wasn’t to reopen.
Volunteering for a worthwhile cause has always been really important to me and I missed it when I wasn’t doing it, so I’m super excited to start again with a charity that I have supported since I became a stylist 9 years ago. The ethos of @pennybrohnuk speaks right to my heart and the service they provide their clients is so special. The centre in Pill is a beautiful, tranquil and inspiring place to be and so I was beyond excited when I learnt that they were opening their first charity shop @pennybrohnukshops. The universe worked its magic and I’m so happy to be volunteering there each week from September. I’ve visited the shop which as yet isn’t open, and I can tell you it’s beautiful with a capital B!! I felt very emotional being shown around, there really is nothing like it in Bristol. As well as clothing, there are also treatment rooms where you can book a whole host of self-care treatments.
Penny Brohn has wonderful supporters and the donations have been coming in for weeks - I cannot wait to have a rummage through the rails! I’m hoping that there will be opportunities to do more than just dress mannequins and would love to run workshops in one of their gorgeous spaces so watch this space.

Competition Time ** Competition Time ** Competition Time
I won a competition at the end of last year and loved how excited and special it made me feel and so to celebrate the start of 2017 I've decided to run one myself. I spent last weekend thinking about what to give away and have decided that the competition is going to be a celebration of love and friendship and so am offering a joint Colour Analysis session for you and your best friend, mum, or daughter. During our time together I will show you which colours will suit you best and instantly give you a healthier glow, a younger, fresher and more vibrant appearance and will help to "take years off". You will learn all you need to know to about making the right colour decisions the next time you go shopping and as a result will start to create a capsule collection of clothes that all colour co-ordinate and work together.
To enter, all you have to do is: 1) Go to my Facebook page here and Like it if you haven't already 2) Like the competition post 3) Comment with your favourite colour The competition will close on Monday 30th Jan and the winner will be chosen randomly and announced that evening. Entrants must be over 18 and live in Bristol. Good luck! |

Vavista Wellness Workshop, 23rd March 2015
As a style expert for the online weight loss programme Vavista, I recently ran a workshop in the offices of an insurance company that is running the Vavista Wellness programme for members of their staff and this is what they had to say after their time with me:
- "I really liked the workshop, got some great helpful information and left feeling really happy and confident"
- "Really helpful and enjoyed it a lot. Got some great tips while being able to keep my comfort and personality"
- "Karen was easy to talk to and gave me some good advice that I would definitely think about when I go shopping next".
- "I found my time with Karen very helpful. She answered every question I had and listened to what I was saying, Karen provided me with some handy hints and tips, and also made me feel good within myself, complimenting my figure and current choice of workwear which gave me a lift and made me smile. Out of all the workshops I have attended I enjoyed this one the most".
If you have your own business and would like me to run a workshop or one-2-one sessions with members of your team to help improve their confidence, professional appearance, and how to create the right first impressions then I'd love to hear from you, drop me an email on [email protected].

Another Great Event at Bristol Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 14/15The Mall was taken over once again by a big white pavilion, catwalk runway, a gorgeous host of models, fabulous clothes and some very entertaining and amusing hosts, namely Mark Heyes and Andrew Barton celebrity stylist and hairdresser to the stars.
Twice a year Bristol Fashion Week takes place at the Mall with catwalk shows, goody bags, free personal styling (that's where I come in) and lots of free pampering on offer. I was there for the full 4 days helping and giving advice to women of all ages, sizes and shapes. It's an amazing few days and I love the opportunity to speak and help women with whatever styling dilemma they may be having, be it not knowing what colours suit them, what body shape they or even where to go for a decent leather tailor! If you haven't been before, make sure you get tickets for Spring/Summer 15 which will be happening at the end of March (tbc) |
Head-to-toe Makeover Competition- Introducing the Gorgeous Julia Evans
I recently ran a very exciting head-to-toe makeover competition in conjunction with 3 other local Bristol businesswomen on my FB page. Atelier hair salon, Jenny Davies make-up artist and Viktoria Kuti photographer were the team involved in the amazing competition which was worth around £800 with clothes supplied by the gorgeous Clifton boutique, Grace & Mabel. The competition ran for 2 weeks and the lucky winner, Julia Evans, was chosen at random.
The makeover took place on Saturday 27th June on a bright sunny day and here's what Julia, 38 and mum of three had to say about her experience:
What were your reasons for entering the competition?
Unfortunately I have been suffering with post natal depression and my self esteem has taken a nose dive. I feel that I have lost myself over the last year or two and, like a lot of mums, put my own needs at the bottom of the pile. I wanted to get some confidence back and not look like a stereotypical 'playground mum'. I want to feel stylish and sexy and get my enthusiasm for life back. I really believe that if you look good then you feel good, I just wasn't sure how to look good any more....
How did you find the makeover day?
I was a bit nervous on my journey to meet up with Karen as I wasn't too sure what to expect. Once we met, I felt like I was spending time with an old friend. Karen made me feel at ease and understood where I was coming from and how I felt.
I loved looking through the clothes rails and picking out things we liked the look of (without being under pressure from kids / time etc!) It was great to have an honest opinion and expert tips on how to wear things (like folding back sleeves, tucking a bit in at the waist etc) I felt very privileged and pampered!
All the staff at the lovely Atelier salon were really welcoming and easy to talk to. I felt instantly that I was in safe hands and that they understood what would be right for me. I have a lot of hair and the colouring took much longer than anyone expected, but I was made to feel very comfortable and treated like a VIP!
Jenny, the fabulous make up artist, totally transformed me. She was very complimentary and made me feel instantly comfortable with her friendly approach. I'm not used to wearing a lot of make up and it was a shock at first to see myself with nude lips and smoky eyes! I usually wear only mascara and a darker lip colour so it was totally different! My husband normally doesn't like make up but even he commented on how great it looked.
Viktoria who took the photos was really friendly and encouraging. I did feel a bit conscious whilst posing but she made me feel at ease and obviously knew what to do to get a great shot!
Has the makeover changed how you view / style yourself?
Yes, definitely. I feel more confident with choosing accessories and what kind of styles and colours flatter me. I am looking at myself as a whole, rather than just focusing on covering up my tummy. It's made me feel like I'm starting to get some more of 'me' back!
What a worthy winner - isn't she gorgeous!

Lunchtime Interview with Steve Yabsley on BBC Radio Bristol
I was delighted to have been asked recently to come and talk to Steve Yabsley on BBC Radio Bristol about life as an Image Consultant, what it involves and how as a child dressing up my dolls, cutting their hair and playing fancy dress with my dog helped to shape my career!
It was a great experience and has got me thinking that I think I might like my own radio show!! What do you think? Talk to Karen Lowe your regular radio fashion agony aunt?!! If you'd like to listen to the interview it's available here for the next 7 days. I'm on at around the 34 minute mark if you want to skip forward!

Semi-Finalist in Natwest Venus Awards, Business Mother of the Year
What a fantastic way to start the week with news that I've now gone from the Quarter Finals to the Semi-Finals in the Natwest Venus Business Mother of the Year award.
The 'Face the Camera' challenge a few weeks ago, was lots of fun and a little bit scary but now I have to show it to the world as the next stage will see my video go to the public vote for one week only on February 6th.
I feel incredibly lucky to be able to run a business I absolutely love and be a mum at the same time and to be recognised in this category makes it even more worth while. Watch this space, video to follow.........
